Ms Gillard was in attendance at the National Apology at Parliament House on 22 October 2018. A central element of the apology was a reception for survivors and supporters in the Great Hall, with speeches from Prime Minister Scott Morrison MP and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

During proceedings, Ms Gillard received a spontaneous standing ovation from survivors and supporters as she entered the Great Hall. She was immediately invited to join the speakers on the main stage, where she made an impromptu speech. After the formalities, she greeted and comforted dozens of survivors.
